With many of my immediate festival family members driving across the country to Hulaween in Suwannee, FL for what I am considering the official END of outdoor festival season, I sit and ponder to myself what a great season it has been. I review over all of the material I have shot, all of the great music I have witnessed, and most of all the people I have met throughout this entire journey. I am one very happy and amazed festy goer. I don't really know how I managed to pull off this run, but in hindsight I got nothin but smiles.
Here's the Pun-Recap of my journey of four major festivals in one summer starting with:
Summer Camp Music Festival 2013
Being a Summer Camp Counselor in training opened more doors for me as a blogger than any past experience has. I feel that the Camp Counselors have an even greater chance at direct impact on the media aspects of Summer Camp than anyone who was official media. They gave me so much opportunity to shine as a blogger and to meet a lot of my favorite musicians on the planet to boot. I got a real good look on the operations behind how things roll and I hope to continue lending a helping hand for years to come. The family of folks behind the scenes that run this amazing event really do a great job at trying to make every year at Summer Camp better and better. It was an inspiring thing and it really brought out some of my best energy this year. It was a rainy year, but it didn't stop me from running with my camera through a downpour to get to the VIP tent for amazing once in a lifetime performances or to the red barn for Everyone Orchestra shows that blew minds. A lot of love was shared.
Mountain Jam Music Festival 2013
This was the first time I ever drove out of the state by myself to a festival. This was also the longest I have ever driven to enjoy a fest. I truly enjoyed my time and experience at Mountain Jam. It is a very beautiful festival experience being literally on the side of a mountain. It was also another rainy weekend, but everyone still made the best of the weekend. This was the only festival I had no media obligation to. I just enjoyed myself and my friends all weekend long. :)
Electric Forest Festival 2013
Being from Michigan this is my home festival. I have been enjoying this venue since 2008 at the first Rothbury Festival. Every year since 2011, I have had the amazing opportunity to shoot highlight videos for the people at the festival with photo and video credentials. I attempt to trump myself every year and this year was really special for not only myself, but many of my festival family as well. It instilled an assurance that Rothbury really is one of the coolest venues and it lives up to the crazy expectation of bettering itself every year.
Lockn' Festival 2013
This amazing festival popped up as a blip on the radar right away for me, as the line-up was just something that couldn't be ignored. The amazing amount of epic jam they brought to the table sparked my interest enough to apply for media and led me to making the trek all the way from MI to Arrington, VA. I am really glad that I did because it allowed me to really have a once in a lifetime chance as a photographer to get as many amazing photos as I possibly could. The stages weren't too large for my lenses and it really broadened my portfolio out. I couldn't have been happier to be shooting some of the most amazing photos that I have to date. Here are a few of my favorites.
- Michael Kang w/ Zac Brown
Overall I couldn't be happier with all of the amazing experiences I have had this year. With winter approaching quickly, everyone bundles up with anticipation for announcement and dates for what is to come next season. I know I am excited to shoot a few indoor local events to keep my festy gland from tingling out of control. I hope everyone finds a way to keep themselves at bay as we await the amazingness that is festival season 2014!!!

Rockn' at Lockn' Music Festival 2013
Hello Festies!,
This year I ended my festival season with a bang by making the trek from MI all the way to Oak Ridge Farm in Arrington, VA for the first ever Lockn' Music Festival. What I found special about this particular event was the stacked line-up of epic jam mixed in with the idea of making the music never end in a seamless fashion. I was determined to not miss this one.
Luckily I got hooked up with a photo pass and had the time of my life shooting some of the most amazing artists all weekend long. In case you weren't aware, Lockn' featured three sets from both Furthur and The String Cheese Incident including special guest appearances and collaborations all weekend long. Widespread Panic, Warren Haynes, Trey Anastasio Band, Zac Brown, John Foggerty, The Black Crowes, and Tedeschi Trucks give you a good sense of what the festival entailed.
What made the festival so amazing for me was the fact that it was the first opportunity I have had to photograph many of these legendary artists. I was definitely one of the happiest souls in the photo pits all weekend long.
My favorite moment of the weekend was when Trey Anastasio came out and performed with Furthur for the first time ever. He helped finish out Casey Jones of Furthur's rendition of Workingman's Dead (the entire album) and played other favorites including Scarlet Begonias and Truckin'
It was an amazing weekend and I took some of the best photos to date. Check out there entire photo album on flickr here:

Summer Camp Music Festival 2013 Highlights
Hello fellow SCampers,
I had a wonderful weekend at Summer Camp this year. My experience as an official Camp Counselor in training was amazing and allowed me to capture many moments I could not have without this sweet title. Having the experience of seeing how everything happens behind the scenes was a really special experience. I was able to meet many of the organizers who work year round to put on this amazing event every year. I was really thrilled to shake so many hands all weekend, as well as interview some of my favorite musicians. I am proud to become such an integral part of the driving force behind promoting such an amazing festival. Here are a few favorite moments from my weekend.
First a foremost, I was very excited to have my camera this year at Summer Camp and see what I could accomplish with it. Last year I shot most content with my Iphone and this year proved to be a good opportunity to vastly improve my photography skills. Here are a few of my favorite shots from the entire weekend.
I shoot a lot of amazing video with my camera as well. I was able to capture some absolutely once in a lifetime collaborations. First I caught was this video of Victor Wooten playing with most of the members of Family Groove company including Janis Wallin. Also seen here is a few members of brainchild and sitting in is also Roosevelt Collier playing slide steel.
Another amazing moment of collaboration I caught during the weekend was Everyone Orchestra. In case you weren't aware, Everyone Orchestra is a collaboration put on at multiple festivals bringing the best talent together for a once in a lifetime jam session. On the lineup this year at Summer Camp was Victor Wooten, Al Schnier, Joel Cummins, Carly Meyers, Allie Kral, Mike Dillon, Roosevelt Collier, and Alex Steele. It was my first time catching an Everyone Orchestra set and I was amazed at the artists ability to pick up and jam.
I also had the ability to interview Victor Wooten of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones and Reed Mathis of Tea Leaf Green. It was one of the most amazing moments of my life! It was the first time the two had met and their energy hit it off right away. They did a jam for me after the interview that was just mind blowing. Here is the jam.
I also got to help shoot interviews for other Camp Counselors and managed to meet Jason Hann and Michael Travis of Eoto/String Cheese Incident. With Electric Forest being one of my home festivals, I couldn't have been more excited to meet them.
Overall I felt like I was running around constantly all weekend trying to get footage of everything possible. Summer Camp did an amazing job giving me more opportunities than I could shake a stick at. I am so grateful I was able to capture this many amazing moments.
With all of the video/pictures I shot I made this short highlight video with some of my best shots. I hope you all enjoy. Stay tuned for more!
BTW I love festy sunsets!

Home from Electric Forest - Vibe Videos
Festies,
I had the time of my life over the past 30 days going to festivals. Electric Forest proved to be the premiere festivals it has always been. I shot a lot of footage and am working on a documentary style video for you all with fan footage.
Right now I have these 4 clips online from the weekend just to get you all started. Also check out my FLICKR PHOTO's from the weekend!
First I shot this amazing performance by Nahko (Medicine for the people). It was a great experience and the energy present was awesome!
I can never get enough of this place every year. The Sollun is my favorite late night spot in Sherwood Forest. This was like 3am and the party was just out of control!
String Cheese Incident never disappoints and their performance was phenomenal. The shenanigans are always worth the ticket price alone!
Sunday I caught this footage of the Beats Antique Mayhem Marching Band. Pretty cool stuff!
Stay tuned I am working hard on my highlight video! Up next!

Interview with Victor Wooten and Reed Mathis (15 minute jam!)
Summer Camp really hooked it up for me this year with the whole Camp Counselor in Training spot. My favorite part about the weekend was this opportunity to interview Victor Wooten and Reed Mathis. I still watch the jam after the interview over and over again. It was just such an amazing improvisation jam that I feel this was a once in a lifetime experience!

Home from Mountain Jam!
Hello festies,
Every year I try to go to one new festival. I don't generally cover the festival as media and it helps me fully experience the event. Mountain Jam was my vacation from obligation this year and I truly enjoyed my journey to Hunter Mountain NY.
Here is a link to my pictures from the weekend. Just Iphone shots but Hunter Mtn NY is beautiful!

From Rothbury to Electric Forest - A Look Back -
Five years
ago, nearly thirty thousand strangers gathered in a small town in
Michigan. They called it a festival, but really it was a journey – a
journey that has transcended space, time, money, and rebranding. In spite
of bankruptcy, new management, and even a new name, Madison House Has found a
way to bottle the magic of its first two years as Rothbury, and re-open it for
the beginning of their newest venture, Electric Forest.
Rothbury
snuck into the scene casually, but with force. Bringing the love early, on
February 13, 2008, the organizers released the official announcement along with
a stacked lineup. Festival veterans Widespread Panic and Dave Matthews
were headlining alongside an eclectic blend of jam, funk, rap, folk, and
electronic. This wasn’t just a music festival though, music was only a
highlight. For the first time a festival was planning to make a
difference in more than just someone’s summer plans. Their purpose was to
“harness the unique energy of the live music community into a durable social
movement.” Using an open forum setting called Think Tank, organizers
wanted to address the issues of climate change and clean energy
alternatives. Adding to the environmental focus, steps were taken to
create what would ideally be a zero-waste event. Disposables were
replaced with 100% compostables, recycling bins were in abundance, and there
was an option upon purchase of the ticket to add $3 as a tribute to off-setting
the carbon footprint.
The 4th of
July “Party With a Purpose” was held at Double JJ Ranch. Come July 3rd,
attendees arrived in droves, descending on the small town of Rothbury, eager to
be introduced to the unknown. No one could have predicted the difference
four days would make in the lives of so many people. Fest-goers were greeted
with the cleanest grounds at a festival to date, a blend of music that could
entertain even the pickiest of listeners, and to top it off, a forest smack in
the middle that can be described as nothing but magical. To add to the
listeners’ excitement was a smattering of SCIde projects, the incarnations of
the members of The String Cheese Incident. The band was currently on
hiatus, but EOTO, Emmitt-Nershi Band, and Kyle Hollingsworth Band were just the
slice of Cheese the fans needed.
Unfortunately
it seemed the magic was never to be repeated. On July 18th, less than two
weeks after Rothbury concluded, Double JJ Ranch was forced to file chapter 11
bankruptcy after a South Dakota bank presented them with a lawsuit for 18
million dollars. Months of court dates and litigation suggested it would
be impossible for promoters and booking agents to plan a festival of Rothbury’s
magnitude again. However, come March the announcement for Rothbury 2009 was
official! Both AEG, the world’s second-largest live show promoter, and
Madison House, the festival’s booking agency, had been able to strike a deal
with the ranch’s federally appointed trustees, ensuring a second coming of the
beloved festival.
Legal
hurdles had apparently meant nothing to Rothbury’s team. Not only did
they pull off securing the location, but the lineup went above and beyond what
anyone could have conceived. Beloved jam band, The String Cheese
Incident, who had been on hiatus since 2007, announced their triumphant return
and only appearance for the year at Rothbury 2009. If that wasn’t enough,
ringing in America’s birthday on the main stage would be The Dead. It
would be their only summer date, and included all former members from one of
the most iconic groups in our nation’s musical history, with Warren Haynes of
Allman Brothers’ fame filling in for the late Jerry Garcia. Closing out
the weekend would be the one and only Bob Dylan. It was obvious Rothbury
was shooting for the stars, and landed among them.
Although the
festival had drawn close to 35,000 attendees, the promoters would not confirm a
third installation after the sale of Double JJ Ranch to Progressive
Resorts. The following January, with heavy hearts, the official
announcement was released. Unwilling to hold a less-than-stellar
event, Rothbury would be postponed for 2010. The official announcement
referenced problems with artist tour schedules, and local papers suggested that
negative feedback from the community was also to blame. However, the
announcement made it clear their “efforts are certainly not coming to an
end.” The organizers were not giving up on the enchantment of the forest,
and said of their supporters:
\
“To all
who attended the first two years of ROTHBURY we thank you for the soul you gave
the event. Those times entered rarified air because of your energy.”
It was clear
the connection between attendees and the minds behind Rothbury was both deep
and passionate. The disappointment was great, but short-lived. By
October of 2010 members of The String Cheese Incident let it slip that they
were working on bringing a festival back to Rothbury and the Double JJ
Ranch. Valentine’s Day 2011 heralded the coming of Electric Forest
Festival, with SCI posting “We’ve made our 4th of July plans – see you in the
forest.” The name was different, but with String Cheese at the helm, it
ensured the magic would still be intact. On February 28th the official
website was up, and the announcement was made that June 30th would mark the
beginning of a new chapter for the forest, with Insomniac Productions taking on
AEG’s previous role. The lineup, though it included three performances by
the hosts themselves, became electric. Amid the usual folk and jam such
as Keller Williams and Galactic was a multitude of the top names in the electronic
music community. Long-time trance/house producer Tiesto, as well as
dubstep legend Bassnectar, were headlining late-nights. Joining them were
Skrillex, Kaskade, 12th Planet, and a host of others from the genre, previously
unknown to the usual Rothbury crowd.
The reaction
was mixed. Rothbury veterans had been pining for the chance to see their
favorite jam bands in Sherwood again, and this lineup was not expected.
The outcry for their original love was emphatic, with a side of
bitterness. Promoters were worried the reception would not be what they
hoped, but the magic was too great to keep people away. Veterans and
greenhorns flocked to the forest, hungry to have their hearts fed with the same
divine energy that had carried them through the first two years. Not
surprisingly, Electric Forest was a major hit. Sherwood Forest was still
the pièce de résistance of any major festival on the circuit, and despite the
slight change in the look of the lineup, the festival still held the same meaning
for those who had experienced its first years. Said one attendee of both
Rothbury and Electric Forest, “The festival’s ability to mix EDM, jam,
bluegrass and every other genre we’ve seen throughout the last three lineups is
something we’ve not seen anywhere else. And for them to do it
seamlessly…it’s pretty impressive.”
There had
never been a festival that drew in its fans seemingly on love alone. Sure
the music has much to do with it, and the forest is incredible. Yet
underlying all the aesthetic and auditory delights is a bond unmatched by even
the longest-running events of its kind. Paired with a production company
like Insomniac, the level of fan interaction only heightened the intensity of
the experience for its attendees. There may never be another Rothbury,
but Madison House beat all odds in its creation of Electric Forest. For a
group of 30,000 to harness the energy of only two years, and bring it back to a
whole new festival is a feat beyond measure.
If you have
never attended these festivals, or have never witnessed the forest in all its
glowing glory, it is easy to write off as perhaps gimmicky, and obviously
musical taste will draw people to the fests that suit them. However, if
you let it, a festival can be more than just music. One fan said of his
experience at Electric Forest, “To be a part of it didn’t change me, but more
so evolved me. It helped me realize my own colors, what I stood for as a
person, and what I cared about.” If you aren’t convinced, just close your
eyes. Imagine standing in a crowd as the music envelops its listeners,
the energy of anticipation for each new note growing, and the only way to
excise the feeling is to dance like everyone is
watching. When your feet get moving you turn around and your family is
all around you, Mother Nature standing firm in her grandeur as your scenery for
the journey, and you are overcome with the knowledge that you are a part of
something special.
Thanks to
the tireless efforts of both Madison House and Insomniac, and in no small part
to the fans themselves, Electric Forest has become the premiere electronic
music festival in the Midwest. Offering a lineup unmatched in
originality, it also gives its attendees the chance at heightened interaction
through costumed entertainers, relaxation in throngs of open hammocks, and
stunning visuals only Insomniac could put together so flawlessly.
Continued greening efforts have kept the forest to high standards, still
maintaining the cleanest grounds on the circuit, and an inherent focus on the environment.
As we prepare for the festival’s third season, it is important we remind each
other why we do this. Music aside, this is a community, a family that we
may only see once a year, or perhaps only once in a lifetime. Take care
of each other, be kind to the earth, and practice the love you preach.
See you in the forest!

Local Spotlight - Barbarossa Brothers, American Opera, Kid Brother Collective & Sprout
It has been a good week or so of music. The holidays are always great for bringing musicians back to their home towns and special shows come from such things. First show I caught was of The Barbarossa Brothers. This band is a new sight in town featuring well established musicians in the local scene. Loren Kranz from The Ragbirds on drums and vocals, Ryan Fitzgerals of Sprout on bass, and Drew Pentkowski on guitar and vocals. I really enjoyed my time checking them out. They have kind of a Jerry Garcia Band sound especially in this song. Also check out the flickr photo-set I shot.
Second show of the weekend was one I was particularly excited about. Kid Brother Collective was a band I had not heard play in over ten years. They booked a few reunion shows to celebrate the re-release of their Highway Miles album on vinyl. American Opera also opened the show. The Flint Local 432 is a great venue with a lot of potential to continue helping out a lot of local music. I enjoyed checking the place out and meeting the organizers who keep the lights on. Here is a cool clip of Jon of American Opera talking about his history with Kid Brother Collective.
First a clip of American Opera. I have been waiting a while to get to shoot Jon play with my new camera. Love his music!
Getting to shoot Kid Brother Collective after being just a 16 year old at a hall show was an amazing feeling ten years later. They played mostly songs off of Highway Miles. I was a bigger fan of their first independent release with songs such as "Few and Far Between" and "The Small of Her Back". They did play "Ringfinger" which is one of my favorites by them but was also featured on Highway Miles. Here is a few clips.
Lastly I headed out to Whites one more time to see Sprout. Was a good way to end the weekend. Here is a goofy up-tempo version of one of my favorite songs of theirs.

Electric Forest Festival 2012 Review
Electric Forest 2012
I must say that the excitement before the festival this year was almost unmatched from years previous. Our excitement before Summercamp was nowhere near the level it was before Electric Forest. The line-up went a bit more towards the DJ side this year compared to 2011. It featured three nights of The String Cheese Incident, along with other headliners STS9, Thievery Corporation, and Bassnectar. There was an expanded lineup this year featuring about 25 additional artists than the previous. With the stellar time we had last year, meeting so many friends new and old, everyone could not wait to re-unite!
Getting there:
Getting to this local festival is always a breeze for me. The three hour drive is one of the most exciting middle of the night experiences I look forward to every year. My party departed Saginaw around Midnight with hopes to arrive sometime around 3am to Muskegon's brocery store.
This year we had a huge group of people. Over 100 people signed up ahead of time to meet up in the designated parking lot, and most everyone showed up. This was the biggest group of campers we have ever attempted to get in together all at once. I believe our caravan of over 50 cars departed from Muskegon around 5am and we entered the same crazy line of cars as every year. It is never a very organized operation and it became very apparent that keeping this amount of people together just might be impossible. After a very long 5-6 hour grueling period we all managed to get in and basically were split into 3 camps because we failed to make it happen. I ended up leading the largest group of people to a pretty distant camping spot compared to years previous. It made for a pretty decent walk from camp to the festival entrance. You can't make it perfect every year :-/. I ended up camping with a lot of new people and meeting them all was great!
The Festival:
As with every year, Madison House and Insomniac attempt to trump themselves. It was very hard to do that with the amazing job they did in 2011. Everyone had the utmost expectations this year.
First major upgrade was they moved the Tripolee stage to right where the festival entrance is. This move allowed for a bigger stage and the area overall could accommodate more people than the original Tripolee. I did not watch a single act there all weekend but I would say I enjoyed the move, while at the same time I miss being able to walk through the old Tripolee area in order to get to the Ranch stage. They funneled everyone a different way this time and it lead to a lot more bottle-necked traffic during peak times. They also added a Ferris wheel to the main entrance area. It seems all of the festivals are having the Ferris wheel come out.
Sherwood Forest:
As with every iteration of Sherwood Forest, Madison House puts the most effort into making sure they make it the best version ever! This year they removed the "Beatlejuice" looking pointy blow up stuff above your heads in the trees. They instead put a lot more effort into building structures and art work. They also hired a huge array of costumed performers that included people on stilts, jugglers, stage dancers, mimes, and just odd people for you to run into.
There was an un-announced stage in the forest called the Salun. It was more an area than a stage. It featured a crashed spaceship dj stage that was almost always playing music. Inside of the Salun was crazy furniture, artwork, and some very creative odd things. I loved it!
Another cool new area was one called Einstein Moments. It incorporated all user integrated activities like a community painting, a crazy user run game, stuff to bang on to make music, and all sorts of hands on activities. The entire area was built to look like a locomotive and on the front had a ton of recycled percussion odds and ends to play with.
Re-incarnation is a recurring area at Electric Forest that always changes each year, but also always keeps a few of it's original key elements. I believe they use the same materials found naturally around the ranch to create the area each year. One upgrade this year was 2 small buildings on a wooden platform featuring stairs you could walk up to get a birds eye perspective of the forest. This was never before something you could do and I really loved the view from up on top of the buildings.
As this is the fourth adaptation Sherwood Forest has seen, it is hard to say whether I like one version more than any other. Every single time I step foot into this magical place, I am immediately overwhelmed with it's amazement time and time again. The odd characters in the forest and the Salun were definitely my favorite additions this year! I really look forward and hope to be able to come back again! Here is a few good shots:
The Music:
Of all four festival's I planned to attend this year, Electric Forest had my weakest preferred lineup, but my overall favorite festival grounds. It was hard to walk in not knowing if I would really be able to enjoy the music while knowing I love the place. Three nights of the The String Cheese Incident was about the only thing I was specifically looking forward to. (How could any Rothbury veteran not?) With that said, I did not shoot very much performance footage all weekend, but I have a few nuggets for you all.
I did very much enjoy the music that was new to me and some of the energy that could be put forth at some of these intense shows, but I mainly came for the headliners, SCI, Bassnectar, Thievery Corporation, and STS9.
String Cheese Incident -
As always I love cheese and getting to see them 3 nights in a row is always worth the ticket price alone. I caught a clip during the day of their first song and one of my favorites Rosie.
Here is my unededit raw footage from one of the craziest moments of their night two set. They had performers in giant balls, on stages, carrying flags, on stilts, and just craziness occuring! Had such a good time shooting as media with a real camera this year! Learned so much!
Last footage I am sharing from SCI is just this close fan persepctive. It shows just how beautiful the lighting and stage setup really was for the main stage. Amazing!
Bassnectar - As much as I enjoyed the set last year, I was nowhere near ready for the amount of people that would be at this show. This is by far the most people I have ever witnessed at the Ranch area and I would have to say, that if Electric Forest expects crowds this big next year, they are going to need a bigger stage. There were people all the way back to the vendors and on all the walking paths. The show was awesome and some of the craziest energy I have ever witnessed, but a bit of a zoo at the same time. Here is another raw clip
Synopsys -
Overall Electric Forest 2012 was an amazing festival. Madison House and Insomniac Events put in a lot of work to make this the best overall experience possible. The production quality was unmatched compared to any other event I went to. No matter what happens next, this ever evolving festival will always be my home. Rotbury is and always will be my favorite festival venue. I hope to be back next year again to experience whatever madness they can come up with :-)
Lastly, check out my highlight video I put together with all of my video footage! It features many of my favorite moments of 2012.

The Holy Gun - nice night out
It has been a while since I've gone out to shoot some local stuff, so I figured this was a perfect opportunity. I only shot one video, a nice jam before set break. I really enjoyed getting out and shooting a few pictures. Check out the Flickr photo-stream for those!

Fall Update
I know things seems a little sparse lately since festival season has winded down. I just want all of my readers to know I am still here and that I am still kicking! Life is busy and a lot less shows are on the agenda for me as of right now. I will be hitting up as much local talent as I can.
I still want to write up my experiences at Electric Forest, Allgood, and Hoxeyville for you all. I may just wrap it all up into one update since it's already been so long since the fests. Expect that to be my next priority for you all. I am always updating the Youtube channel with anything I go check out. Make sure you are checking that feed the most as I am apt to get that content out first.
Thank you all for continuing support and I look forward to future shows this fall and winter!

Summercamp Music Festival 2012
Hello readers, sorry for taking so long to write this one up, but here is my experience at Summercamp Music Festival 2012.
The Festival -
This year was almost complete opposite from the year prior. Last year we had rain and clouds all weekend. It was a mud party. This year was almost unbearable hot temperatures and the dust from the dry weather really made it hard to enjoy certain aspects of the festival. I found myself trying to leave the shade for just minutes to do something only to be running back. I tend to sweat long before most people and I could drench a dry shirt in minutes the heat was so hot. This led to a great weekend of water balloon and squirt gun fights though :)
The line-up was stacked this year and with the heat, it was almost impossible to check out every band you wanted to. Luckily my crew was camped right next to the camping stage and to my surprise almost every act that played throughout the weekend was GREAT MUSIC. I have to go back and listen to some of those under-cards!
The Lumineers -
My good friend Lyndall showed me this band a few months before the festival. I was immediately hooked and drawn into their sound. They are from Colorado and their newest single "Ho, Hey" is gaining popularity quickly. I wouldn't be suprised if this band is playing on much larger stages in future years. I hope for their sake that they do well. Here are a few videos I shot.
Michael Franti & Spearhead -
This was my 3rd time seeing Franti. I must say after a few shows they may feel a little stale, but he never dissapoints on the good vibes. I love Franti shows so much that I don't even care if he tells the same stories and does pretty much the same things at every show. It doesn't take innovation to LOVE! I am so happy to finally show my readers some of why I love this human so much!
Digital Tape Machine -
This was the only band I shot all weekend with my good camera. The dust was just too scary. I really enjoyed their set and will definitely be checking out this group again.
Moe. and Umphrey's Mcgee -
The two groups who are responsible for the whole festival. If you go to Summercamp, you will see these bands!
Pun Synopsis -
Overall scamp this year was a great festival. The heat made it impossible for the vibe to get to extreme levels, but the different format of this festival always leaves me loving every minute of it. I would of taken the mud from last year over the heat this year. Both Summercamps I have attended have proven to be enduring festivals. I hope next year it finds a nice median.
Here is my highlight reel I put together with my footage... Until next time ~ Pun
Getting there -
Being over 7 hours away from the festival grounds, this is the farthest drive I would be making all year. After my enduring experience last year driving from midnight-7am, I decided it would be better this year to leave a day early and book a hotel. This enabled me to drive during the daylight and take my time. The good night of sleep was also a great refresher to help overtake the first day of the fest well.
I had an RV pass this year so that I could take my car into the festival grounds. It was very helpful not to have to haul all of my gear from the parking lot and allowed me to charge my camera batteries, phone, etc.
I was able to get in early and secure a good spot in the woods for the rest of my festival family before most people were let into the grounds. Overall my experience getting to the festival and getting into the grounds was way better than last year.

The Umphrey's stage was moved to a much better location this year not far from it's original just on higher ground and at the edge of the festival grounds. The Jagermeister stage was also moved and the set up this year seemed to work out better all around. The main Moe. stage seemed to be pushed further back at the top of the hill to accommodate a few more people this year. Camping was extended a little further beyond the main stage as well. This year seemed to be the biggest turnout yet, but the attendance in my opinion was close to last year so it was hard to tell.
The Music -
I was the more excited about the lineup at Summercamp than I was for any other festival I planned on attending. Three nights of Moe. and Upmphrey's alone made the ticket price worth my money, but with by far the strongest undercard I have ever seen! Having camped next to the camping stage allowed me to sit and thoroughly enjoy music even while hiding under my shade tents. Our camping spot really couldn't have been much better on that regard. Here are my personal highlights.
Victor Wooten -
I was seriously excited to see who I regard as the best bass player on the planet. He put on a workshop about nature and his camp he runs. I think it was just an excuse to play some of his new music. Here is one video I shot. Keep in mind there are no drums and when the band actually played their scheduled set it was more rounded out. I was ecstatic to be this close to Victor.

Home from Electric Forest
Happy Fourth of July everyone. It's been a few days since Electric Forest and I am happy to say I had a wonderful time. I am already hard at work on my highlight video and probably won't write my review until that is completed. In the meantime head on over to Flickr or Facebook and check out my photos from the festival! Here is an amazing clip I took in Sherwood. Keep an eye on the youtube channel, I will be releasing clips as I find good ones. Full highlight video coming soon. :)

Post Scamp Update
Hello my friends,
It's been a while since I've written but if you've been visiting the site you've noticed lots of pictures and videos highlighting my experiences lately.
I spent the entire day yesterday shooting Free Music Fest in Freeland, MI. It is a great event in my home town and I had a blast hanging out the entire day.
Check out this short 3 minute video from my footage from Summer Camp. Next Up, Electric Forest!!!!!

11 Days! - Summercamp Music Festival 2012
In only ten days my official festival season will be kicking off by departing for Summercamp Music Festival 2012.
Here is a playlist of all my videos from last year. I had a blast and can't wait to get you some better coverage this year :)
May 19 - Life Size Ghost @ The Emerald Theater (Detroit, MI)
May 24-27 - Summercamp Music Festival (Chillicothe, IL)
June 10 - Radiohead @ The Palace of Auburn Hills
June 22-23 - Dave Matthews Band @ Deer Creek (Noblesville, IN)
June 28-July 1 - Electric Forest Festival (Rothbury, MI)
July 10 - Dave Matthews Band @ DTE Energy (Clarkston, MI)
July 19-22 - Allgood Music Festival (Thornville, OH)
August 17-19 - Hoxeyville Music Festival (Wellston, MI)
May 24th-27th marks the festivals 12th year and looks to be it's biggest turnout yet. Every year since 2001, moe. has headlined the festival and will be playing 5 sets over 3 days. Umphrey's Mcgee has been playing the festival since 2003 and has taken the co-headlining spot next to moe. They also will be playing 5 sets over 3 days! It's guaranteed to be one amazing weekend of music including many other great acts including: Janes Addiction, Primus, Michael Franti and Spearhead, and Pretty Lights just to name a few.
In my opinion, Summercamp has THE BEST lineup this year when put up against the other 3 festivals I will be attending this year. I am so excited to see some great music and see my festival family again!

Major Chords for Minors - White out Party - Whites Bar
Last Sunday was a great day for local music. Whites Bar in Saginaw, MI hosted a benefit for Major Chords for Minors, a local non-profit organization that provides music lessons to children who cannot afford them. Over 10 bands played all day from 2pm-2am. I had a blast getting out and checking out some of the areas best talent. Here are the highlights.
The Banana Convention - I intended on shooting some video of their set but forgot my mic at home and had to just shoot some pictures.
There was a lot of music I did not get great video of, but check out my flickr photoset for pics of a few bands not listed.
The Holy Gun - Another great set from these guys. I cannot get enough of Ryan Fitzgeralds amazing bass playing and Ray Torres great guitar licks. There are two songs in this video, the second of which I have posted previously, but this one is amazing!
Loren Kranz and Friends - I am always excited to cover Loren's music when he gets the chance to slow down a little from touring non stop with The Ragbirds. There is a lot of talent from all the other bands that played who came together for these great collaborations.
Thick as Thieves - My second time covering this awesome group. They just got home from a short tour on the road. Their skills were sharpened and you could tell the music was pretty on point! Can't wait to work more with these guys in the future!
Sprout - I finally got to shoot these guys with my new camera. They have been spending some time in the studio working on getting a few songs recorded.

Here comes awesome! Festy Season is underway!
Festival season is upon us and I cannot be more excited to get to my first festival. 36 days and counting and I will be Summercamp Music Festival bound. Cannot wait to see friends and experience some great music. With Coachella in California just winding down after last weekend I am safe to say that the season is now officially underway. That Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre performance was amazing!
Since my last update I am proud to say that Punlive will officially be covering Electric Forest and Hoxeyville music festivals as Media. I will also be covering Summercamp and Allgood, but not with media credentials! Maybe next year ;)
I have been enjoying getting out to local music and shooting some of the scene. There is a lot of bands out there and I don't plan to stop covering music anytime soon. I run into so many wonderfully talented people. It feels amazing to be respected by a few of them :)
I hope to make you all some great videos this year. Ramping up the post production on my videos is my first focus. I really can't wait to use some of my new video/photos to create some great professional coverage. Excited to get to a festival with the new camera and see what I can accomplish shot wise. Summercamp will be a great start to get the feel for the types of shots I can take. Summercamp has the best lineup of music IMO so it's going to be mainly about the music. Expect some in depth reviews of a show or two this year. Once my feet hit the ground at Electric Forest it is going to be another story. The lineup is not that overall intriguing to me music wise (except cheese!), but I do expect one of the craziest and wildest experiences of my life. I plan to bring as much of that experience back to you all. I know musically Electric Forest might not be my bag of chips, but there is no way I could ever miss an opportunity to spend time with my friends in the greatest place on earth. It is going to be a whole new level of awesome and I wouldn't miss a chance to be back in it, EVER!
Since I won't be running from stage to stage non stop all weekend like I will at Summercamp, I plan to use that time wisely getting all the photos and clips of the vibe that I can. Expect something really interesting and tons better than last years coverage. I really cannot wait! I have so many ideas for types of videos and shots I want to do. You will see me running all over the festival grounds waving my monopod/tripod in the air running from one spot to another getting great shots hopefully :)
I also want to get with a few of the acts at the festival as I didn't do any artist interviews last year. Expect that to change this year. Not sure who I want to target yet, but I will find someone interesting :)
I really want to cover the crowd reaction. I am going to be doing short interviews and working to get on the spot commentary from festival goers. I can't wait to see how that will go.
That is what is currently on the Pungenda right now. Here is the list:
