Why 2011 was epic for me

First and foremost, I have had the craziest year of music ever! Having the opportunity to do 3 different festivals has been great. Before all of this I had only been to Rothbury 2008 and 2009. It is my festival home and I love to be there more than anything else in the world.

In June 2010, my mother died and I missed a lot of live music I was planning to attend including Bonnaroo and Cheese at Horning's. It was a terrible year for me and with no Rothbury to keep me standing it just felt out of place. I was determined to make up for it in 2011 and I did by far! First of all, I must have been getting some great karma from Cheezus because in April just shortly after the announcement of Electric Forest, I got hooked up PHAT and got a Media Pass to the festival. It enabled to feel like I actually deserved to be a part of what is my favorite place on earth by giving something back to everyone! I had never felt so honored, almost feeling undeserving. One thing I did know was I wanted to do my best.

Before the VIP treatment at Electric Forest, I went as a normal festy to Summercamp Music Festival. I had an awesome time. It was my first festival outside of Rothbury, MI.  It was my first opportunity to meet a lot of my festival family for the first time and I am so grateful to have all of them in my life. Each and every person I have met is amazing. It all started with Infobury and we have now become one huge entity of awesome that expands much farther than a message board!

I somehow had even more good fortune and managed a MEDIA PASS to Hoxeyville music festival too. I got to do my first ever artist interviews and I learned so much. I did my best to give something back and punlive.net is what I have done thus far. I have no intentions of stopping. Even without media passes and superstardom in 2012, I am determined to continue covering music. My next investment is a real camera. I am going to start making many more edited videos and hopefully be able to make some that actually look more professional next year. I know everything thus far is pretty amateur looking but I kinda like my feel :) I think we took the festival scene by storm this year. High definition smart-phones have not been out that long and I think it is surprising how much footage is being released online. In just minutes after shows you can find quality footage online. It's amazing and I love being a part of it. I love all of you, and I can't wait for next year! ~ Pun

Hoxeyville Music Festival 2011

The third festival PunLive had the wonderful opportunity to attend this year was Hoxeyville Music Festival 2011. Located in Wellston, MI, in the middle of Michigan's own Manistee National Forest. Aug 19-21 marked the 9th year for the festival and the first time we had the opportunity to attend. Hoxeyville is a smaller festival that thrives on the smaller attendance number (3-5 thousand) and is home to local bluegrass legends Greensky Bluegrass. The great environment mixed with some awesome music made for a great weekend!

Getting There:

Luckily again this festival is only about a 2 hour drive. I took my good friend and videographer with me. It was his first festival and I figured what better way to introduce him than a nice laid back festival in our own back yard. We left a few hours later than we had wanted but the drive was easy and once we got the festival grounds it was hard to tell if we were pulling into a campsite or a festival. The place really is that small and laid back. What I liked best about arriving was there was literally no wait to get in. Never have a been to a festival where it was drive in, show em your credentials and bada-boom your camping without at least some kind of wait.

The Festival:

Hoxeyville really is a wonderful place. The grounds are so small that you can hear the main stages from almost any camping spot. There are only 3 stages at this festival in 2 locations. What I mean is one of the stages has an exact replica stage right next to it. This allows for artists to break down/set-up while there is a band playing on the other stage. It is an ingeniousness idea and allowed for seamless music all weekend. It allowed the scheduling to be great and almost impossible to miss an act.

There was one other smaller stage under a tent that featured many smaller acts over the weekend as well.

Camping was set up in sections. You could choose to walk in (away from your car) and set up camp, or camp next to your car in what they called "family camping". Each had their benefits. The walk in campers had a lot more shade and were in the wooded areas, while the car campers were out in a field in your normal style larger festival setup with more room to set up. It was nice having a choice as for medical reasons, camping next to my car (power source) is almost a must.

The festival featured a glow disc golf course put on by the Solar Glow Disc Experience. The first festival I saw this at was Electric Forest and by the time they got to Hoxeyville they really vamped up the experience. It was almost like a mini sherwood forest in there. One of their holes featured a giant screen and working Nintendo 64 set up to play a round of mario kart or something before moving on to the next hole. It was really something. Check out their pics on facebook!

What really needs to be conveyed most about this festival is the overall vibe. If I had to sum it up in a short phrase it would be "Chill and Family". It felt like everyone who was veteran status at this festival was happy, accepting of you, and excited it was your first time.

Most of the performing artists (especially band members of Greensky Bluegrass) could be found hanging out in the crowd at shows or just wandering around peoples campsites.

The small vibe and awesome atmosphere make Hoxeyville just magical. I don't know if it's Michigan festivals in general or the chillax environment, but Hoxeyville definitely has it's roots planted here. They love doing what they do so much that I don't think the festival organizers want a large crowd because something too large would only tarnish what Hoxeyville stands for.

The Music:

Hoxeyville featured roughly 25 artists this year. Headlining performers included a wide selection of music such as the quickly growing rock rooted jamband Umphreys McGee, bluegrass legends Greensky Bluegrass, Grateful Dead drummer The Mickey Hart Band, and many more. Here are the Punlive highlights of the weekend.

Umphreys McGee -

It was their first time playing Hoxeyville. It seems like every year Hoxeyville tries to bring a band that really changes it up a little. Umphreys played one of their best sets of the year. It was very energetic as the band had just taken a few weeks off before playing this show. The music was amazing and for sure the biggest crowd of the weekend.

Greensky Bluegrass:

This fine group of musicians hail originally from Kalamazoo, MI. They have been touring the country since 2000 and have played with some of the best around. I didn't realize at first that this festival was home to this band. They come here to party and to enjoy their festival family. They played an amazing set. It was my first time seeing them live and I must say I will be checking them out in the future.

This band came all the way from Louisiana to play at Hoxeyville and they sure brought the funk! Featuring two bass guitars. Their show had some of the most energy from the crowd. Everyone was dancing away!

This Michigan local band is really starting to sweep the festival circuit with their original compositions and personal sound. I would call them just a folk band but you can find the lead singer Erin Zindle playing many instruments ranging from the violin to the accordion to the mandolin. Their sound varies between songs, but overall they have the same homely feel. They just finished recording their new album (coming soon) and have been playing a lot of songs from it.

We always seem to catch good footage of these guys and at Hoxeyville we even had the chance to interview the band. Check out their new 4 track ep that just came out and 3d music video on their website

Pun's Synopsis -

Overall I had one excellent time at Hoxeyville. I will be going back!. The place feels like home and being out in the middle of the national forest made things magical. We even got some northern lights and a view of the sky at night that was breathtaking. The family and chill atmosphere made this festival really one of a kind. I loved the connection between the musicians and the people as well. It was something that could not exist at a larger event. Don't let the smaller size of the place scare ya, it's really worth checking out!!!   ~ Pun

Electric Forest Festival 2011

Rothbury, MI is my favorite place on earth. After attending the first two Rothbury festivals, my excitement about going back via Electric Forest could not have been more heightened. There is something very special about this place to me and everyone I attend the festival with . We had one epic time!

Getting There:

Luckily for me, I only live about 2 1/2 hours east from the festival grounds. I managed to get my sister and her boyfriend to attend this year and it was their first festival. We departed together in the PunLive mobile at midnight on 7/30 in order to meet up with our "festival family" early at a grocery store so we could all travel into the festival grounds together and camp as one big massive entity. This worked out well. We had people in our group who traveled from all corners of the country to come together. There was representation from California, Texas, and New Jersey just to name a few. Driving in together was crazy as we were at least 30 cars worth of people. Convoy! It wasn't too hard in the middle of the night!

Once arriving at the festival grounds we all pulled our cars into a line of cars that we would stay in for the next 5 or so hours. It was not expected to have to wait this long but my "festival family" is getting used to having to wait in these types of lines. It was also another good time to get to know a lot of NEW people as there were soo many more of us at Electric Forest than at Summercamp.

After our long wait in line and some issues with ticketing, we all finally got through the checkpoints and were able to group together and find a camping spot. We ended up getting a great spot very close to the festival grounds. I think our group took up almost an entire row of cars. Setting up camp is always an intense time and lays out who your going to be around the rest of the festival. Finding a good camping spot is key to having a great time all weekend. We work very hard at it as a group, but there is always a bit of random unexpected thrown in there. Our camp was so big we ended up calling one part of it "North side" and one "South side" of camp!

The Festival:

The Stages -

First and foremost, the Rothbury festival grounds are the best on the planet. They feature all that is beautiful about Michigan, while bringing something completely magical to the experience. This was my third time here, and everytime there is always something that tends to be completely mind blowing and new! The grounds were set up like the OLD Rothbury festivals minus the big Odeum stage that was featured. The new main stage was at the Ranch location and was extended quite a bit to accommodate the 15,000 attendees expected at this festival. It featured most main acts such as The String Cheese Incident, Bassnectar, Tiesto, and Pretty Lights throughout the festival.

Sherwood Court, the second main stage was located through Sherwood Forest and featured many higher tier acts such as Galactic, Lotus, and Sphongle. It is a huge field that can easily accommodate the entire crowd if needed. There are less trees and shade on this stage than the ranch stage. It is nice, but nowhere near as magical as the Ranch area stage! One thing I liked a lot about Sherwood Court was that it had an amazing view at night of the edge of Sherwood Forest and you could see a lot of it's beautiful glory by just turning around from the stage and looking backwards.

Tripolee, the third main stage at the festival had been significantly revamped this year to accommodate more people and overall was just a lot better than in previous years. This stage featured some of the good electronic music as well as some of the good under-cards during the day. It had a lot better stage lighting than both previous Rothbury festivals and was a great stage overall.

Sherwood Forest -

The forest this year was really the crown jewel of the festival. I attempted not to have high expectations for Electric Fores because it was half the number of tickets of the previous Rothbury festivals. I was worried the forest wouldn't be much different than before. Boy was I wrong!. The forest was absolutely mind blowing! If you stayed in the forest for a while you would find out that it was on different lighting schedules and could completely change at any given moment. One moment you were in disco prom night mode and could only see about 50 feet in front of you with all the lights, then the next moment you were in a completely different lighting mode just as amazing but you could see 100 yards a head of you. They really took everything that was awesome about Sherwood forest and made it much better this year.

The artists who built Sherwood really worked hard this year to make it just as magical to walk through during the day as it was at night. There was a section called Reincarnation that featured a lot of hand made artwork using old scrap metal and natural things found around the festival grounds. They really spent a lot of time making it absolutely amazing. It is something so magical that pictures by no means represent how awesome it felt to be there. Check Punlive's YouTube and Facebook for even more pictures and video!

The Music:

The music was really the biggest change in the festival in comparison to previous Rothbury events. The electronic dance music was hard for a lot of Rothbury veterans to grasp and enjoy. I think what Madison House and Insomniac Events envisioned and put together this year was pure genius. The popularity of dub-step and electronic music is growing at EPIC rates lately and getting a total picture of what the promoters were trying to accomplish could not be really understood until it was experienced. Putting these great bluegrass jam bands together with the crazy energy of the electronic acts seemed to work almost seamlessly and I think everyone I know left the festival with at least some better understanding of it all.

The festival this year featured three nights of The String Cheese Incident. At Rothbury 2009, the String Cheese Incident put on what is considered one of their best "incidents" of all time. It was a return from a hiatus for the band and the energy was unreal. The 2009 incident converted many Rothbury veterans into cheese heads instantly. With Electric Forest featuring three nights of cheese, it was a no-brainer for many. The rest of the lineup didn't matter.

I walked into Electric Forest having only seen three of the 70 acts on the line-up, and afterwards I can say I am truly a fan of a lot of the music! Here are the PunLive musical highlights:

The String Cheese Incident - Cheese has been a growing and popular bluegrass rooted jamband since the mid 90's and have always been known for playing some of the wildest shows out there. They feature some of the craziest crowd interaction and the band puts a lot of effort in making sure the fans have the time of their lives during their sets. This year at Electric Forest, the seconds night they played they pulled out all the stops. They brought out huge parade style floats. One of a shark and one of a race car driver. There were many crowd performers hooping and walking on stilts.

Galactic - This funk band out of New Orleans, LA is amazing and everyone should check them out. I was very excited to see Galactic. Many of my personal friends had seem the previous. I was able to get some great picture and video of the band. They put on a truly amazing show!

Bassnectar - I got the chance at Summercamp to experience Bassnectar and it made me very excited for Electric Forest. The promoters really knew what they were doing by putting this act on right after String Cheese Incidents 2nd night set because the crowds energy was just amazing. It forced a lot of cheese fans to stay and watch what is considered one of the best electronic acts in the business today. Bassnectar over the past few years has gone from playing the small stages to the main stages and the energy that comes to his shows is absolutely crazy!

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros - These guys played on the last day of the festival. The last day is always about recovering from the three nights of partying you already did. I think the band was in recovery mode too because this set was from what other fans say, "less energetic than previous shows they have performed". I really enjoyed it anyway as it was my first time seeing them. I loved when they opened and Alex Ebert jumped out into the crowd. Check out this clip.

For highlights from other artists that performed, check out our YouTube page for all the shows PunLive attended.

Pun's Synopsis:

Electric Forest is by far the highest quality festival I have ever been to. The amount of time and effort the promoters, the art work designers, and the musicians put into making this the best festival ever really was amazing. I found myself put into soo many overwhelmingly beautiful scenarios at Electric Forest that there is no way that any video or picture could ever capture just how magical the place is. I from the deepest of my heart hope Madison House continues it's efforts to put on festivals in Rothbury, MI. I will be there!

Check out these Highlight videos PunLive.net put together highlighting our experience at Electric Forest. I walked in with just an Iphone 4 and walked away wishing I could have done it with a better camera.

Some of the photos used are credit from a great festival buddy of mine. See his highlight video below. It's really great!

Summercamp Music Festval 2011 - Bubbles, Mud, and a great time!

I love music festivals more than any live experience on the planet. The first festival I was able to attend this year was Summercamp Music Festival in Chillicothe, IL. Having never been to a music festival outside of the state of MI (besides a DMB Gorge journey), I was a bit skeptical as to if I would enjoy Summercamp as much as past festivals I had attended.

Getting there:

I left town with two local friends in two cars. We were to meet up with an entire crew of folks who we all had met on an online forum. It is not uncommon to meet people online in the music world and we make many friends online before we meet them at events. It makes for some very interesting and awesome experiences. Summercamp was a 7 hour drive from my home town in MI. My crew left around midnight and arrived to meet our new friends around 7 am. The part we did not plan for was the rain. It rained every moment of the drive. It was treacherous and I will not do it again. Some friends who we met up with arrived a day early and slept great in a hotel the night before. This is a great idea if you are driving a distance to get to a festival.

Once arriving safely in Chillicothe, we met our new "festival family" members and set off to enter the festival grounds with plenty of time to get in early and get set up. What we were not ready for was about a 4-5 hour delay in letting people in due to the rain delaying the set-up of the festival grounds. This gave us some of time to get to know each other better before getting in and setting up camp.

Summercamp is not a "camp by your car" style camping festival. You have to bring everything from your car and haul it a long distance in order to set up camp. Luckily we had about 20 or so "family members" with us and between everyone bringing something important, we really did quite well finding a good spot out of the mud without having to make many trips back to our cars.

The Festival:

As soon as camp was setup I immediately set out to get my bearing and see what the entire festival grounds had to offer. I immediately fell in love with the layout of this festival. The main stage is great and is on a nice hill. Offering great sound and a good view to just about anyone. It is the stage that Moe. performed on each night, a long with most other higher tier line-up acts.

Second main stage is located in heart of the festival grounds. People literally camp on all sides of this stage and it is visible to many campers. This stage featured Umphreys McGee each night.

After locating the 2 other smaller stages in the venue, I then set out to get a feel of where everyone was camping. I walked into the woods to escape the heat only to realize that this was the place to be. The woods offered a beautiful environment to camp in and seemed to be the place for shakedown. It's really part of what sets Summercamp apart from many other music festivals. The close proximity to the stages aligned with the awesome area really make this a great festival venue. It really helped me understand why Summercamp has been around since 2001 and has only grown over the years. This years turnout was said to be the highest ever by far!

With every festival comes your various crazy experiences. For me Summercamp was the first festival where rain really dampened some of the experience. Luckily it wasn't bad enough to miss any music, but really made getting from one end of the festival ground to the other kinda tricky. Even the golf carts were getting stuck. It was really good that everyone was camped so close to the stages. Other festivals where the walk is much further would have made this a disaster. Luckily, I roll with some of the most hard core festies and we didn't let the rain dampen our fun at all. We had a blast!

The Music:

Summercamp really had the most stellar lineup this year. Seeing all the music was tough but I managed to see almost everything I wanted to. To highlight a few:

The Headliners:

moe. - I personally had never seen moe. before. I was blown away by the quality of their music and how well it was played. They have been around since 1989, and are one of the best Jambands on the scene today. Summercamp is their HOME FESTIVAL and they know how to put on a great event. They played 3 main sets over the weekend. They have some of the most crazy lights and lazers using interesting techniques to create crazy visuals. Rainbow colored smoke anyone?

Umphreys McGee - Umphreys over the past few years has blown up in popularity. I am a newer fan personally, and I really got to take in all that they had to offer at Summercamp. They also played 3 sets at Summercamp not including another set with Huey Lewis! They have some of the most beautifully colorful lights I have ever seen. Almost creating a picture in front of you at times. Their music is great and has some of the hardest rock influences of any popular jamband on the festival circuit. If you go to festivals, you know Umphreys!

The Rest:

Euforquestra was really an awesome first for me at Summercamp 2011. Originally from Iowa, but coming all the way to Summercamp from Colorado, I was really excited going only having heard them online. I wondered what kind of crowd and vibe they would have live. Well I can say now they are an awesome group with great music that people of all ages can get down to. Check out some soup and other videos on our Youtube channel.

The Macpodz from MI are a PunLive favorite. I love their energy at shows and how much love they portray in their music. For a band that does not have a guitar player, they really know how to put on a great show. They now feature their keyboard player axing it out on the Keytar now in some songs to make up for it. They have a new EP out very soon and check out their new 3d video on their website www.macpodz.com

Bassnectar - I had no idea what I was walking into going to Bassnectar at Summercamp 2011. The whole electronic thing is new to me but is growing in popularity very fast. A few years ago Bassnectar was playing on the smallest stages at festivals. Now he features immense crowds with some of the most energy you will ever see at a show. My videos don't even do it justice. Whether you like the electronic stuff or not, you have to check out Bassnectar the next chance you get.

Slightly Stoopid - I have been a fan of these guys since they first spun up randomly on my Pandora radio a few years back. This was my second time seeing them live and it went awesome because I got to meet Kyle from the band before the show. They mix all sorts of music together and overall have grown into a very well known band with a very wide array of musical influences.

Pun's Synopsis:

I had a great time experiencing tons of new music at Summercamp music festival 2011. I met some of the coolest festival goers on the planet, got to experience an entirely new festival grounds, and saw some of the most amazing music you could possibly pack into 4 days. Summercamp is a must from now on :) Here is a few more PunLive videos to give you a better idea how much fun we had!
